This blog post is inspired by chapter 6 of The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein. (this is an affiliate link.)
I’m a big believer in all things manifestation and trusting that the Universe is guiding me in the right directions.
If you’re a “everything happens for a reason” type person, this blog post is surely going to inspire you even more. It will help you begin to understand and trust in those reasons and why you’re being guided in a certain direction.
I recently started reading The Universe has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein. Actually I’ve been listening to it on Audible and reading it. I think it really helps to let the messages sink in this way.
I was greatly inspired by chapter 7: Obstacles are Detours in the Right Direction.
Now, it can sure can feel, in the moment, that these obstacles aren’t taking you in the right direction. In fact, in the moment it likely feels really hard. How are you possibly going to overcome this obstacle?
Feeling through the tough times in overcoming obstacles
In the chapters leading up to chapter 6, Gabby describes how to really find the joy and happiness in life. That includes looking, essentially, at the positive side of any situation.
Now, it doesn’t mean that you stuff down all of those negative feelings. In fact, you’re meant to feel through them.
We’re honestly never really taught to feel our emotions. We’ve been told from such a young age, “you’re fine. You’re okay.”
We continue to hold onto those feelings well into adulthood. It’s why we apologize for crying in front of someone. Or feel bad for being an emotional person. Because of this, we stuff our emotions down and don’t share them with anyone.
In turn making us feel like we can’t ask for help and we have to navigate all on our own.
Let me tell you right now, you don’t.
Feeling through these emotions, whether it’s through meditation, journaling, therapy or coaching, releasing the feelings is what’s going to allow you to experience some incredible miracles.
Your obstacles are guiding you
The obstacles you face come into your life for a reason. You may not know right away what they’re teaching you, but it will become clear.
One obstacle I experienced was infertility.
We struggled to get pregnant naturally for quite awhile. I started seeing different doctors and being prescribed different medications to help us conceive.
After about 8 months of trying with medication and no luck, we turned to a fertility specialist. We had five failed IUIs (intrauterine insemination) before turning to IVF.
This was honestly such a hard and scary time. What if it didn’t work? Why was this happening to us? I’m a healthy, young woman, why isn’t my body cooperating?
To make a very long story short, we ended up having a successful first round of IVF and now have a 19 month old daughter.
What I came to learn through this obstacle was that the Universe was guiding me the entire time. A then friend of mine at the time guided me to the acupuncturist who I truly believe helped us conceive with the power of IVF.
I was guided to share my story of infertility and IVF. Sharing our story helped me connect to so many women across the world who were suffering the same. I reconnected to women I hadn’t talked to in forever who experienced the same issues. They said they were inspired by my bravery and started sharing their story as well.
So while this obstacle felt incredibly difficult at the time, I trusted that the Universe had the best intentions.
All I wanted in the end was a healthy baby, and we received just that. The path to get there was long and hard, but looking back on it now, I know that’s what we were meant to experience.
Overcoming obstacles with the help of the Universe
Are you blocking the support of the Universe?
In chapter 6, Gabby speaks about how we can potentially be blocking the support of the Universe. It’s likely due to trying to control the outcome.
Thinking things should look a certain way. Or that if it’s not happening exactly to our specifications, then we’re not receiving what we asked for.
Recently, I was experiencing a major obstacle that was feeling really hard. We recently had our second child (conceived naturally!) and breastfeeding was feeling super hard.
I felt at a loss for what to do because for the first month of his life he was an amazing breastfeeder. But into his second month of life we were having a lot of troubles.
He was almost always fussy and wouldn’t take to the breast very well. This had me feeling extremely discouraged and wondering if we were going to have to just give up on breastfeeding altogether.
I began journaling on this and asking the Universe for guidance.
Asking for guidance and help – surrendering
When I surrendered my obstacle to the Universe she started guiding me in all the right directions.
There’s a prayer that Gabby recommends saying when you’ve come up on an obstacle. It goes: “Thank you, Universe, for helping me see this obstacle as an opportunity. I will step back and let you lead the way.”
After doing so, I reached out to my doctor, asking for help. Here’s the thing, starting with asking the Universe for help is the first step.
Allow the Universe to guide you in all the right directions, and be open to them, even if they don’t make any sense at all. You may feel these nudges or your intuition guiding you to call a certain person, or make a social post on a topic, or listen to a certain podcast.
These nudges are from the Universe. They’re inspiring you to take action on overcoming obstacles and what you’ve asked for help on. In doing so, the person you called may have someone you can see. Or writing a social post leads you to reconnecting with someone who has answers. Or that podcast guides you to take a new action you wouldn’t have otherwise.
The Universe was nudging me to reach out to my primary doctor on a Wednesday, even though I had an appointment scheduled with her that Friday.
I sent a message and then went to workout and journal. While I was journaling (literally about the difficulties of breastfeeding), my doctor’s nurse called.
She said they had an opening with the lactation consultant, could I be there in an hour? I said absolutely! Trusting that this was the Universe answering my call and leading me in the right direction.
When I got there, the consultant said, “I’m so glad you were able to make it today. I’ve had an extremely busy schedule and didn’t have any openings for weeks. This one just came up out of no where.”
I honestly almost started crying right then and there. It was the Universe doing her thing.
Be willing to be guided in overcoming obstacles and turn it over
Sometimes the Universe works her magic really fast, and sometimes it can take awhile.
In the instant of my breastfeeding complications, the Universe was swift. When it came to our IVF and infertility journey, it was a much longer road.
But all the while, in both instances, I was willing to be guided by the Universe to overcoming these obstacles.
Doing so allowed me to know when to take action. And honestly, to listen to my intuition and where the Universe was guiding me.
Overcoming obstacles happens when you turn them over and are willing to be guided. The Universe will hear your call.
Gabby says in her book, “It’s very likely that the plan [the Universe has in store for you] will be far different from what you expected or hoped for. Remember that the guidance you’re receiving is leading you in the right direction, even if it feels like a detour at first. Stay committed to that truth, and you’ll feel fully supported.”
The Universe Has Your Back
Honestly, this book has been such a game changer for me recently. I’ve been releasing some obstacles recently (in different areas of my life) and allowing the Universe to guide me.
I highly recommend you pick up this book. Either in audio or written form.
I promise you will feel so incredibly supported and will likely begin to witness so many miracles in your life because of this book.
